Sunday afternoon racing in the Ocean June 27, 2004
Four boats headed out
to some promising racing in the ocean.
The wind was a steady 9 MPH at the club by 9:30 a.m. with the typical
June gloom, but the direction was south with some moisture. Some big
low caused a nice wind today. As we watched the Lynch Ocean Race start,
we got ready for three races.
Kitty, TGIF, Trash and TAZ.
Prior to the start the winds were
building. By the time the gun went, we had a steady 15 mph with gusts
to 16+ at the RC boat. We had more wind in some sections of the race
course. Thus, there were full whitecaps and the surface of the sea was
scrabbled. The fetch made for a three foot seastate.
Race 1:
A
clean start for all, with a 2.0 mile weather leg two times around
finishing downwind. With full planing to weather and wiring reaching
the downwind legs, (fun surfing on those waves!) the first race was
over quickly.
There were plenty of capsizes and
some minor equipment failure on Kitty.
Bill McKinney and I discovered later
that Trish Billings was watching the whole series from the boardwalk.
Kitty was well ahead of the fleet in the first race, and, on the final
reach to the finish line capsized with the now notable "pink" chute (the
only way she could tell which boat was which from a distance). Kitty
"banged the corners" to take advantage of strong winds near the beach,
and lost it just off the Billings boardwalk place. Anyway, we did
recover and finished with some time to spare.

Race 2:
With
only Kitty and Trash left, we set out again on the dual LW course. Same
finishing order:
Race 3:
Kitty
and Trash agreed to ask for a shorter course. Both crews were both
getting a bit warn. This race featured Kitty running into some kelp and
Trash doing a crash tack to avoid an I-20 cat on starboard tack. We
rounded the weather pin about the same time. Kitty pulled away hot and
had a 100 yard lead. Trash make that up, going deep, and ended up about
10 boat lengths ahead at the finish.
Back at the club we did a casual
debrief over some refreshments. As this was the other boats first ocean
race, they were impressed with the winds off of Mission Beach. We were
too.
